Understanding Childhood Scoliosis
Your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis or an abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis can develop between the ages of 10 and 15, usually in girls. If a parent has scoliosis, it’s more likely their children will also develop the condition. Dr. Ash, The Chiro Guy, is a spinal expert and can evaluate the spine for scoliosis.
Scoliosis: Integrative Chiropractic Care
Scoliosis is clinically defined as a curvature of the spine more than 10 degrees off from center. It can also appear combined with lordosis (abnormal curvature towards the front of the body) or kyphosis (abnormal curvature towards the back of the body).
Scoliosis is not just a physical disfigurement, causing uneven shoulders or hips, but can also cause real pain and discomfort. This affects not only a teen’s physical health but their sense of identity and social well-being and self-esteem. Scoliosis can also cause heart or lung problems if severe.
Curvatures of less than 20 degrees are considered mild, but should still be checked out every few months by a trained spinal expert to ensure the curvature isn’t getting worse. Due to growth spurts, adolescents are more likely to have increasing curvatures; the severity of their scoliosis can increase by as much as 10 degrees in just a few months.
Chiropractic care assists the adolescent body by making sure the spine is properly aligned and by providing frequent checks to make sure the curvature of the spine in scoliosis is not worsening due to growth spurts. Chiropractic care also addresses chronic back pain and muscle aches from growth spurts.
