Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy is an alternative medicine technique that utilizes stimulation of blood flow and qi to specific area for recovery. Cupping involves placing specialized cups on the skin and creating a low-pressure vacuum suction that causes tissue and blood to be pulled from injured area. This may help with circulation, inflammation, common cold, pneumonia, bronchitis and musculoskeletal conditions. Cupping Therapy treatment lasts approximately 10-15 minutes and is usually pain free. Cupping therapy is also effective in drawing out toxins, loosening tight muscles and stimulating the immune system thus accelerating the healing process.
How Does Cupping Therapy Work?
At The Chiro Guy, cupping therapy sessions typically last between 5 to 10 minutes. Once the cups are comfortably placed, we guide patients through gentle range-of-motion exercises to help mobilize the muscles and fascia beneath the cups. For example, if cups are applied to the lower back, we may instruct patients to perform light cat/cow stretches. For shoulder placements, simple arm rotations or throwing motions may be used. These active movements encourage deeper tissue release and promote circulation—targeting the root cause of pain or stiffness more effectively than passive treatment alone.
Is Cupping Therapy Safe?
Cupping is a safe, non-invasive, and time-tested technique that complements many chiropractic treatments. While temporary red or purple marks may appear after treatment, these are not bruises. The discoloration occurs as cupping draws stagnant blood to the surface and stimulates fresh blood flow, promoting natural healing. The color intensity often reflects the level of muscular tension: darker marks indicate more severe tightness, while lighter marks tend to appear as the tissue becomes healthier with ongoing care. These marks usually fade within a week.
What Are the Benefits of Cupping?
Cupping therapy at The Chiro Guy offers numerous benefits, especially when paired with chiropractic adjustments. It helps:
- Relieve muscle tension
- Enhance range of motion
- Reduce inflammation
- Promote faster recovery
- Ease pain without excessive stretching or strain
Cupping can also be used prior to chiropractic adjustments to relax surrounding muscles, making spinal corrections more comfortable and effective.
